The Singing Mermaid – Dance and Storytelling Workshop for 5 - 14 years old
Let your children’s imagination fly with this magical dance and storytelling workshop run by Royal Ballet-school trained Lisa Mowser.
In this day-long workshop, your children will explore the story and characters of The Singing Mermaid, from award-winning children’s writer Julia Donaldson, dancing and making movement in response to the story, as well as taking part in arts and crafts activities during the day, in preparation for a final performed reading in front of parents in the Rose Garden of Clos de Gaye.
The Singing Mermaid is about a mermaid (sic) who is sneakily lured by Sam Sly’s big promises of fame in his circus. The mermaid sadly discovers that the reality doesn’t match the promises and wishes to go back to her beloved home. Unable to leave, she calls upon the help of new friends to make her escape back to freedom (Source: Bookfortopics.com)

All of our children’s workshops at Clos de Gaye are predominantly run in English to enable non-native speakers to get meaningful and creative exposure to practice their language skills. However, most of our facilitators are bilingual and we always have translators on hand if needed for those who need additional support. Our facilitators are warm and loving teachers who are used to working across language and culture and will ensure that your children not only get the benefits of participation in arts and creative activity, but also language and literature too.
Our founder, Caroline Watson, is, in addition to her theatre and leadership credentials, a trained English teacher with many years experience as an examiner for the British Council, so she is well-versed in effective language learning and the need for an immersive approach in meaningful activity that encourages young people to communicate in real-world ways. She speaks multiple languages herself and also has three bilingual children so brings a great deal of expertise in helping young people to learn languages.
